Nestled in the heart of Lake in the Hills, Bistro Wasabi offers a refined and vibrant Japanese dining experience that masterfully blends traditional Asian flavors with inventive culinary twists. This charming sushi and Asian restaurant at 4590 Algonquin Rd is a true gem, delivering an exquisite menu that caters to both sushi aficionados and those seeking richly satisfying hot dishes.
From the moment you step into Bistro Wasabi, the ambiance captivates with its moody lighting and tastefully minimalist decor—a perfect escape from the bustle of Algonquin Road outside. Scott Fogel’s words truly resonate here: diners feel as if they've been transported to a chic, trendy downtown Chicago eatery, with an atmosphere that’s both intimate and lively.
The menu offers a well-curated selection of standout dishes that delight the senses. The Agedashi Tofu tempura is a sublime starter—crispy on the outside yet silky inside, drenched in a subtly sweet soy sauce that plays beautifully with the batter's crunch. For sushi lovers, the assortment of sushi sashimi and maki for three is an excellent choice, showcasing the freshness and quality that Phillip Tang praised, noting how perfectly fresh the fish is and how inventive the rolls flare up the palate.
Special mentions must go to the Spicy Tuna Roll and the show-stopping Shrimp and Scallops Entrée, which Scott Fogel described as generously portioned and exceptionally satisfying. The nigiri options gleam with freshness—Anthony Shugaliy singles out the scallop nigiri with a chili oil drizzle as a sublime treat, demonstrating the kitchen's nuanced mastery of flavors.
Bistro Wasabi balances the sophisticated with the comforting in its appetizers like the Crab Cakes paired with creamy garlic sauce, and hot starters like Asparagus Beef Roll, a tender NY strip wrapped around crisp asparagus, all finished with a savory teriyaki glaze. Even the vegetable tempura appetizer is elevated by light, crispy batter and vibrant, crunchy veggies.
The drink selections complement the food perfectly. On a Tuesday night, guests can indulge in a half-off deal on select wines by the bottle, as Shalini Joiner experienced, adding a luxurious touch to the meal. From a well-crafted Mojito or Manhattan to traditional Hot Sake and saki wine, every sip feels thoughtfully paired.
Finish your meal with a delicate bite of Green Tea Mochi or the cool, chewy Mochi Ice Cream—a sweet relief that lingers pleasantly after the main courses. Extra sauces such as spicy mayo, creamy garlic, and ponzu are available to customize and enhance every dish to your taste.
Bistro Wasabi is not just about outstanding food; it’s the entire experience—the attentive yet unobtrusive service praised by Paul J, the warm and welcoming atmosphere filled with happy conversation, and the feeling that every visit is a special occasion. Whether you’re on a date night, a group dinner, or simply craving an authentic, masterfully prepared Japanese meal, Bistro Wasabi delivers with finesse and heart. This is a dining destination that invites you to come hungry and leave utterly satisfied, already planning your next visit.
Absolutely love this sushi restaurant! Everything was delicious, the fish was fresh, the rolls were inventive, and the tempura was perfectly crispy.
This is place is good. We ordered several rolls to split that had cooked proteins because my wife is pregnant. They were good but my preference is raw fish. The nigiri was REALLY good and fresh. I highly recommend the scallop nigiri with chili oil drizzle on top. Service was great as well. We will definitely be back to try more off their menu!
Came for dinner with a group of 4, on a weeknight. The ambiance is very inviting with moody lighting and tasteful decor. It was quite a calm and relaxing environment- and you would never guess you are sitting in a strip mall off of noisy Algonquin Road. We took advantage of the Tuesday half-off deal on wine by the bottle (under $100). I had seaweed salad and the shrimp/scallops entree- which came with tempura vegetables and miso soup. Hubby had ceviche, and maki- crazy and dragon. Everything was delicious. After, we had green tea and mango mochi. Our server was very friendly and prompt. Had a great time!
What a great place. The amount of food I received for my shrimp and scallops entree blew me away, and it was sooooo good. My wife got the NY Strip steak, and it was a nice size entree, too. The atmosphere is chic and trendy, and it feels like going to downtown Chicago. We'll totally be back!
Wow! We finally got around to trying this place last night after hearing so many good things, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. From the second we walked in, the atmosphere was so warm and welcoming – buzzing with happy conversation but still intimate enough for our table. Our server was a total pro. Attentive without ever making us feel rushed, and she gave a fantastic wine recommendation that paired perfectly with our food. And the food... let's talk about the food. We started with the crispy calamari, which was perfectly light and not at all greasy. For my main, I had the short rib bolognese. The pasta was clearly homemade, and the sauce was so rich and flavorful. My wife had the seared salmon, which was cooked perfectly with an amazing crispy skin. We cleaned our plates! What really sealed the deal for us was seeing the manager, Lin, on the floor all night. She was helping her staff, checking in on tables, and had such a genuine smile. She stopped by our table for a moment, and you can just tell how much passion she has for this restaurant and for making sure her guests are happy. That kind of leadership and care really shines through in the food and the wonderful service from her team. We left feeling so happy and taken care of. We're already planning our next visit! This place is a true gem.
Last night was my first time visiting this location. I'm not a big fan of sushi but their menu offers a variety of other dishes for anyone to enjoy. The price is a bit high but not outrageous. Our server was friendly and attentive despite the place being packed for the holiday (Festivus). Overall I enjoyed it and would go back again.
Everything was delicious! Just one thing to mention — my friend tipped a little less than usual (not sure why), but the servers were loudly judging us, and we could clearly hear their comments. That felt a bit rude and uncomfortable. It’s unfortunate because the food and experience were great otherwise.
